Well, Big Daddy and Dwain wouldn’t. The rest I could work with.

Brody’s family meant so much to him, were an integral part of his life in a way I was unfamiliar with, but one I maybe wanted. If it came down to it, he would choose them, as he should. I would expect nothing less, and I sure as shit didn’t want to come between them.

Isaac stepped into the office, where I was pretending to work instead of thinking about Brody. “Oh, hey. FYI, you have an hour to get ready, and then you need to leave for an hour before coming home to meet Brody here. I’m letting him in, then making myself scarce so the two lovebirds can have a night to themselves.”

“We’re not lovebirds,” I gritted out, when inside, my pulse might have been dancing around at the thought of it. I was ridiculous about this guy.

“Okay, yeah, sure, and I’m not the sexiest twink in Georgia, with the most fuckable ass. Obviously, we both know I am, in fact, the best, and the phrase power bottom was coined for me, which means you’re also really in L-O-V-E with your country boy, so stop denying it and go get ready. Fifty-eight minutes.”

I rolled my eyes. Sometimes I didn’t know if I wanted to strangle him or…nope, strangle him. That was the only thing I wanted to do.

“I’m going, I’m going.”

“I mean, it’s your choice. If you want to look like that.” Isaac pointed at me, his finger roaming up and down my body.

“Hey, fuck you. I’m hot.”

He patted my arm. “I know, sweetie. Of course you are.”

“Why do I put up with you?”

“Because we’re family, and we love each other, and that’s obvious by the fact that I’m here with you, no matter what?”

He was right. I leaned in and kissed his temple. “You’re all right, I guess. What are you going to do tonight?”

Isaac looked at his fingernails and began to pick at one. “Oh, I don’t know. I’ll figure it out. I was thinking about getting a hotel room. It might be nice to have some time to myself.”

“You mean have some time on Grindr?”

“Who? Me? No way. I actually took the app off my phone. There’s…something about the town air here.”

I frowned. “What’s going on with you?”

“Absolutely nothing. You’re down to fifty-three minutes, and there’s a lot of work to do. Go shower.”

I laughed. There was no one in the world I would let talk to me the way I let Isaac do.

I went to my room, showered, shaved, and got dressed. I wore a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. It wasn’t as if we were going out, so I didn’t need to dress up.

When I was done, I said goodbye to Isaac. I thought about heading to the Barn to see if Lauren was around, but then it might be hard to leave to make it back to Brody on time, so I drove to this little park on the outskirts of town. I didn’t want to see anyone who would ask me questions or remind me that they couldn’t know I was close with Brody.

I parked, got out, walked over and sat under a bushy maple tree, and…nothing. I fiddled with my phone for a while, wondered again if I should have gone to see Lauren…maybe pouted a little because I was sitting under said tree, acting like a big baby who had their favorite toy taken away just because we couldn’t go out in public yet.

Today was supposed to be a good day. I had a date with a sexy man, who’d hopefully end up naked in my bed all night.

I still had some time to kill, so I walked through the park. As I got closer to the other side, it got busier as I went, before I noticed what looked like a small farmer’s market.

With each step I took, there was either someone watching me or I’d get a, Cohen Mitchell, right? Hi, Cohen. How’s Mitchell Creek? Any idea on an opening date?

The last question was something Isaac had been asking me about as well. We were nearly ready, so we needed to set a date and do some hardcore marketing beforehand. As he reminded me nearly every minute of the day, he couldn’t do his job unless I did mine and chose a date. I didn’t want to admit I was waiting to see if things got sorted out with the O’Ralleys. What they did shouldn’t have mattered unless I was trying to one-up them and do better, but the fact was, I wasn’t. I wanted to give them air to breathe a bit before we came in and took some of their business, even if part of it was simply because Mitchell Creek was open again and there was mystery behind it.
