“Have you considered the fact that you might still be grieving Drake?”
Taylor snorted at the thought. “No. I am one hundred percent not grieving over a man who betrayed me. Who would be pathetic enough to do that?”
Kim sighed, and a melancholy look came over her face. “Me. I did it for years.”
Damn it. She’d put her whole foot in her mouth. Still, there was a huge difference. “He was your husband.”
“I would have mourned Beck no matter how long we’d been together,” Kim admitted. “Sometimes we meet our soul mates and they aren’t ready for us or we aren’t ready for them. Sometimes an asshole decides to get in between the two of you and keeps you apart for years. All I’m saying is it’s okay to still ache over what happened between the two of you.”
Taylor took a long sip. The gin was slightly floral and nicely refreshing. Maybe she could drink all night.
Or she could walk into that dungeon and try to find what she needed.
“It doesn’t matter. I won’t be working with him for long.” She’d thought about this all afternoon. “I know he’s focused on this op, but I don’t think it’s going to go the way he thinks it will. I’m going to have to work my way up. It could be years before I find myself in a room with his sister.”
Julia Ennis was all Drake and Kyle cared about. They would get her safely inside the organization and then they would get bored and find someone else’s op to glom on to.
“I’m not sure about that,” Kim said, glancing around the room as though checking to make sure no one could listen in. “You know I used to be a spy.”
Kim’s eyes had lit with mischief and her voice had gone low. Taylor couldn’t help but grin. “I had heard rumors about that.”
Out of the corner of her eyes she caught sight of Big Tag walking into the room. He’d changed into a white dress shirt but still wasn’t wearing a tie. His sister-in-law was with him, smiling up at him as he said something to her.
Grace Taggart immediately flagged down the server carrying the tray of champagne around.
She looked so calm and serene that it was hard to believe she’d watched the woman yell at her adult son barely a few hours before.
“Well, I might have noticed earlier today that Big Tag cleared the conference room and I might have been super nosy and found a way to listen in,” Kim admitted.
Taylor gasped and turned toward Kim. “Seriously? This is a classified mission.”
“Oh, they were so not talking about the mission,” Kim assured her. “Well, not the classified one.”
“Nah, they were talking about Drake’s delicate feelings, and my uncle was playing the dad role.”
Taylor nearly jumped out of her shoes. When had Kyle joined them? “Hey, we were having a…” What had he said? “Drake’s delicate feelings?”
Kyle had a glass in his hand. “Oh, so delicate. He is a fainting romance heroine, and my uncle is the elderly grandma who inspires him to go after the dangerous lover of his dreams. At least that’s how I read it. Yeah, I caught Kim listening in. She’s not so great at the spy thing anymore.”
Kim frowned. “I am, too. And you might have caught me, but you didn’t turn me in.”
Kyle shrugged. “Those can be amusing conversations. I wouldn’t keep them from anyone. I’ve often thought about trying to find a way to record them and turn them into a podcast. ‘Granny Ian’s Love Advice.’”
“I think he would be upset with that.” Ian Taggart wasn’t a man she would cross.
One side of Kyle’s lips curled up in a hint of a smile. “Only if I didn’t share the profits with him. But Solo’s right. They weren’t talking about the op. Drake is way more concerned with getting you to like him again.”
Of course he was. She wouldn’t be easy to work with if she didn’t like him. “I suppose he was surprised to find out his one-night stand was coming back to haunt him.”
“He was surprised to see you here since he’d been planning on breaking you out of prison after he offed his sister.” The smile was off Kyle’s face now.
She’d heard this before. “Yes, that’s a ridiculous story.”
“I don’t know. I thought it was kind of romantic.” Kim’s nose wrinkled. “I know. I know. Still totally on your side, but he managed to sound so wistful even when Big Tag was talking about his dick brain.”
Kyle snorted. “Nah. It was Drake’s dick brain. Yeah, for some reason dicks always come in somewhere in these conversations. Big Tag is a philosopher. But seriously, Taylor. He was talking to me about finding you and breaking you out and life on the run before he knew you were here.”
