He’d been so close to getting inside her again. So fucking close to taking the first step that would bring them back together. The need still pulsed through his system.

He pushed through the conference room door. He couldn’t do this on a cell phone. He needed the computer Jax had specially rigged so it was as safe as it could possibly be, the same one Taylor used when she talked to her Consortium contact, though it would show a different number.

Big Tag was sitting at the conference room table. “She’s already called Adam. She wants his company back on the case. She yelled a lot, but she still thinks he’s the best, and we can use that to control the situation.”

“I’m going to talk to her.” He glanced at the clock. It was long past midnight on the East Coast, but his mother often stayed up late working. “Tell Adam I understand the position this puts him in, and I appreciate his discretion. How much does he know?”

“Not enough, but he’s got security clearance,” Tag pointed out. “He’s smart enough to know Julia likely wasn’t who she said she was, but he’s been discrete to this point. He knows about Kyle and that Kyle had a relationship with Julia. He’s a smart man. He can put two and two together and come up with rogue agent.”

“Fill him in.” He needed Adam to keep what he found private. Adam and the company he’d started with former McKay-Taggart employees had worked for the Agency several times. They specialized in missing persons, and Julia Ennis had been one of very few failures for the company. A necessary failure.

“Why would Julia call your mother? I thought she was trying to stay under the radar.” Big Tag sat back, a deep furrow between his brows. “Does she want the whole world looking for her?”

Well, they might be looking for Julia, but that particular woman no longer existed. She’d had extensive plastic surgery, and she’d killed anyone who could ID her. She was living as a woman named Jane Adams. She’d stolen her identity, and it would likely be hard to prove she wasn’t who she said she was. Julia would be careful, making sure everything was in place.

“She wants chaos,” Kyle replied. “She knows damn well Drake isn’t going to let this go anywhere, but she wants him scrambling to try to deal with the situation. At some point she’ll call him.”

He had no doubt about that. “This is a distraction, but a smart one. I can’t ignore it, and I’ll have to spend resources on it. Apparently my mother’s already been in contact with my longtime tech. After Kyle came down to tell me what’s happening, I realized Lydia had been trying to contact me. I didn’t take my phone into the dungeon. I thought the world would be stable for a few hours.”

“Well, you forgot Julia’s still in the world, so that’s your fault.” Kyle turned his uncle’s way. “Do we have eyes on MaeBe? This could be a distraction to kidnap MaeBe.”

“She’s still at the club,” Tag said. “Charlie’s already talked to West, and he’s going to hang with her at Sanctum tonight. A couple of the guards will take turns watching until we’re sure it’s okay to leave. She’s safe, but she’s not going to be happy about it. I think she was planning on going to some festival this weekend. Running Man or Burning Twat. I don’t know. I can’t keep up.”

Kyle’s eyes went wide. “She’s doing what?”

“Well, probably nothing now, and that’s why she’s going to be pissed,” Tag replied with a shrug. “She’s been wearing boho shit around the office for weeks trying to figure out her festival chic look. It’s cool because West is going with her. Though I’m worried because he’s lived on a ranch all his life. I don’t think he knows what drugs are. If someone gives him candy, do you think he’ll wake up two weeks later married to a goat?”

Kyle seemed to grow two inches. “I think someone’s going to get their ass married to my foot if they don’t take this seriously.”

“I feel for that person,” Tag said with not an ounce of irony as he turned Drake’s way. “Just so you know, I had Chelsea check Jax’s work. He rigged it so all of our cells get pinged through the system as long as you’re within a hundred feet of the building. Your cell will show that you’re in LA. You can call her. I know you would rather keep this private…”

He would, but sadly this was now part of the op, and at least Brad wasn’t around. He trusted Tag and Kyle to keep anything privately said to themselves.

The door came open again, and Taylor slipped inside.

Fuck. He did not want to do this in front of her. Kyle knew about his family. Tag wouldn’t care. Not exactly. Tag wouldn’t hold it against him.
