She licked her lips and my dick grew harder than it ever had.

Don’t do that, Faith. I’m trying to be the good guy, but if you lick that lip one more time.

She pulled her bare arm out of the blankets and pointed at my chest. “Who gave you that little leather bag around your neck?”

Stupid. She’s not looking at your muscles. She’s staring at the bag.

Chapter 13

Daniel

he shook her head and continued to point at the bag. “Did my mother give you that?”

“Yes.”

“Jesus Christ,” she muttered under her breath,

“What?”

She took off her own little bag around her neck. It was funny how her being butt naked and appearing so sexy in the snow, made me not see the bag against her chest.

Addie Mae must’ve given her the same type of bag.

The bags were twins. Both were tiny and made in red leather that was tied together with black string. Heart-shaped keys dangled on each side.

“Why did she give you yours?” I asked.

Sitting up, she kept the blanket around her chest. Those beautiful bare arms appeared smooth in the light. She put her bag on the coffee table. “Why did my mother give you yours?”

“I have no idea.” Walking over to her, I sat on the floor and set mine on the table next to hers. “She just told me to wear it.”

“When?”

“Last week. I’ve been wearing it ever since.”

“And. . .” She bit her bottom lip.

“What?”

“Anything weird happened around you?”

You mean besides finding you having sex with snow?

I cleared my throat. “No. Why?”

“Are you sure?”

Images flashed through my mind—her moaning that name and wolves howling like people.

“Daniel?” She grabbed my attention. “Are you sure nothing odd has happened?”

“I’m sure.” I opened mine.

Tiny items fell out and spilled onto the table—a small vial of blood, animal bones, herbs, two smooth black rocks, ash, and a long lock of curly hair. I looked at Faith and studied her curls. “I think this is a strand of your hair.”

Faith cursed under her breath.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“I have no idea, but. . .my mother has something to do with it.”

“We should call her.”

“She’s not going to answer. And if she does, she won’t be any help. I called her about everything coming alive and she laughed like it was impossible. But now. . .now, I bet she knew what was happening.”

A cold shiver ran through me. “What do you mean?”

“What?”

“You said everything coming alive? What do you mean?” I tried to keep the concern off my face.

“I’m going to sound crazy, if I tell you.”

“Don’t worry. You’ve already set a high standard for crazy. We might as well talk about last night. I’m not going anywhere.”

She stirred, looked away, and held the quilts around her. “Never mind.”

“No.”

She gripped the blankets and rose from the couch.

“Where are you going?”

She paused. “I don’t know.”

“Please, sit down.”

She turned away from me. “I’m fine now. Thanks for everything, but I need to. . .be by myself.”

“No.”

“Yes, Daniel. I’ll talk to you later.”

“No. Goddamn it. We have to talk about it now.”

“Fuck that.” She walked away, dragging the blankets with her. “It’s too insane.”

I yelled back at her, “Like I said, I don’t care!”

She disappeared.

“Faith!” I jumped up and followed her past the huge dining table with the artistic chandelier and walls of trees. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She stopped in front of the wall of trees and stared at them. Blinking, she turned around and looked in front of her. I turned that way. Huge windows served as the wall. I’d been so preoccupied by the paintings I hadn’t noticed the breathtaking view. . .or the ice sculpture that stood outside, facing the house.

That was the one in jail, yesterday. The one with the big dick.

Before Faith fell asleep in the snow, she’d whispered something.

I kept replaying those words in my mind.

“My snowman.”

The ice sculpture glistened in the sunlight. The temperature must’ve been warmer today because all her other sculptures stood in little puddles. If the snow didn’t let up, they would all be melted by the afternoon.

“My snowman.”

My flesh quivered. It didn’t do that much. Few things freaked me out, but last night had shifted my view point.

I turned to Faith. I didn’t like the way she stared at that thing through the window. Like the sculpture was about to move. Like he breathed. Like it was a real man in front of her. Like she’d gone fucking crazy overnight.

Like I’d lost my Faith forever.

Even with that wild glaze in those widening eyes and that mouth gaping open, she was gorgeous. That said a lot about how crazy I’d become over her. There were serious red flags dangling around her. For god’s sake, I’d witnessed her humping the snow. She’d taken the love of winter to an all-new high. I should’ve been out of here, but I couldn’t leave.
