We stood in silence for several minutes as she watched the ice sculpture. It got to the point where I was waiting for him to move myself. And not one sane thought hit my head. I wanted the bastard to breathe so I could choke the life out of him.

If he loved her, then he wouldn’t have had her out there in the cold like that. Why not put her inside and make sure she doesn’t die out in the snow. You sick fuck. Do you even care about her? Wait. No. What am I saying? This thing isn’t alive. She’s making me crazy!

A maddening laugh left her lips.

I jumped.

She shook her head over and over.

“Faith?” I trembled.

She turned to me as if I’d just showed up. “I’m sorry. You should go, Daniel.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“No, I’m fine.” She left the dining room. “I’m just going to get this straight with Mom. Thank so much for getting me, but—”

“No, you don’t get to walk off without giving me an explanation.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No, you fucking don’t. We’ve known each other for too long. I’ve got your back. What the hell is happening to you?”

“Nothing.”

“What about these bags your mom gave us?”

We passed the huge wall covered in the map and headed into her kitchen.

“What do you want from me?” she asked. “I have no real answers.”

“Then tell me what you know.”

“I know that I’m crazy.” She flipped on the light, paused, and turned me way. “Wait. How did you end up being inside of my house?”

“I saw you outside last night.”

She froze.

“And. . .I figured I should take you inside, since you were. . .”

She closed her eyes.

“Since you were naked.”

She whispered, “When did you find me?”

“Late at night. Must’ve been around three or four in the morning. You were a few feet in front of your house in between the surrounding trees.”

She opened her eyes. “Why were you out there at that time?”

“I-I. . .”

She raised her eyebrows.

“I was chasing wolves.”

“Wolves?” Her eyes widened.

“I wasn’t sure, if they were wolves or not, but I thought I should check them out.”

“Why weren’t you sure if they were wolves? You know every creature around these mountains.”

I shrugged. “It was a weird night for both of us.”

“So, something weird did happen to you?”

“I don’t know if that is as weird as. . .”

“What?” she asked.

“I don’t think it was as weird as your night.”

“Meaning.” She crossed her arms around her chest and leaned against the kitchen’s doorway. “What did you see?”

“Who’s Remy?”

She gasped. “Did you see him?”

“No, but I saw you. . .being with him.”

“Being with him?”

“Yes. Naked.”

“You said that.”

“And moaning,” I added.

Her voice cracked. “Oh.”

I said the other words through clenched teeth, “And moaning this man’s name.”

She cleared her throat.

“Who’s Remy?” I asked.

“Long story.”

“We have time.”

She left the doorway. “Mom was doing her magic thing tonight. That’s what’s going on. And you know her well enough to not try to make sense of her craziness.”

“I don’t think this was just about your mom. You were out there talking to him and he wasn’t around.”

“I clearly thought I saw him.”

“Who?”

“Remy.”

“And who is Remy?”

She walked off with her gown of blankets. “That’s a crazier story.”

“Try me. I really want to hear that one.”

“Listen.” She went to the cupboard, pulled out two cups, and set them on the counter. “I need time to get myself together.”

“You had a chance to do that. It failed. Now let me help.”

“It didn’t fail.” She turned my way. “What are you talking about? I’m fine. Mom’s the one that is crazy!”

“You were outside at four in the morning, naked and moaning about someone that wasn’t there.” I got in front of her. “What. The. Fuck, Faith?”

“I don’t have anything to say that will make sense, so if you need sane thoughts then go somewhere else.”

I tenderly grabbed her arm. “What do you want, tea or coffee?”

“What?”

I gestured to the cups. “Tea or coffee?”

“Tea.” She pulled her arm away. “I can make it myself. I was making you a cup.”

“No, you sit and I’ll make it.”

“You’re still fucking bossy and you always need to be in control.”

“That’s not true.”

She hit her chest and spoke in a deep voice. “I’m a man. I’m strong and big. You sit. I do it. I’m a man.”

“Please, sit down, strong and equally-capable woman so that I can make us two cups of fucking tea.”

“Cursing in the morning?”

“I’m a grown man!” Those blankets hugged her just right. I wanted to rip them off. Tear each quilt away one-by-one. “In another second, I’m going to pick you up and put you in a chair.”

She pouted. “You’re still bossy.”

“I’m clearly not bossy enough or we would’ve still been together.”

She remained silent on that.

“You have ten seconds,” I said.

“I can make my tea.”

“You’re not in any shape to make anything, but you can tell me what happened last night.” I pointed to the chair and waited for her to sit down.
