Finn turns his ass toward us and shakes it. It’s about as tight as I imagine his hole is.

Cody and I glance at each other at the same time. Tempting as the idea is, I shake out of the spell Finn’s ass captivated me in.

“I said I was trying to get back in the swing of it,” I say. “I’m not sure I need a fucking crash course.”

“You’re right. You’re right.”

“So what do we do?”

“I’m thinking.”

“Hayden.”

That voice is familiar. Way too familiar.

I turn to see Lance standing beside us. He sizes me up. I can tell he’s irritated with the costume. No surprise there.

I stand there, frozen, unsure of what to do.

Two guys from his posse flank either side of him. They’re all wearing muscle pads beneath T-shirts. Lance wears a black Batman shirt with the yellow logo across the front. His mask rests on his head, pinning his hair back.

Lance’s gaze shifts to Cody. “Dean?” he asks.

Fuck.

“Um, it’s actually Cody,” I correct.

Why the fuck did I say that? That sure as hell isn’t going to help me any.

Lance’s gaze shifts between us.

“Big surprise.” He turns around and dashes through the side hallway to the entrance.

I follow after him.

As I look back to Cody, I can tell he’s surprised by my reaction. But Lance was my boyfriend for three years. I don’t want him thinking I’m an asshole…or that I was ever doing anything shady behind his back while we were together.

I step out the door as Lance walks through the parking lot, toward the street.

“Lance,” I call out.

He whirls around. “You are totally seeing that guy, aren’t you?”

“No. You’ve got it all wrong. He’s my roommate.”

“You live with him?” he says as if that’s even worse.

“I didn’t have a choice but to move in somewhere the rent was affordable.”

“Well, I’m sure he makes it real fucking affordable for you, doesn’t he?”

“Why are you making this a thing? It’s not any more than that.”

I catch someone approaching us within my periphery.

It must be Cody, but as I turn, I see it’s Finn. “You and Cody about ready to head back to your place so we can get this party started?” he asks with a wink.

Fuckkkk…

“You’re an asshole,” Lance says before storming off.

I turn to Finn just in time to see Cody coming out of the entrance. He sets his hand on Finn’s shoulder.

“Sorry, man. We both have early days tomorrow. Maybe some other time.”

“Okay. Nice meeting you boys,” Finn says, and judging by the delivery, it’s clear the offer is still on the table.

Cody approaches me and slings his arm around my shoulders.

“Let’s get back home. I think we’ve had enough partying tonight.”

“No. You don’t have to come back. I think I just need a little breather after that.”

“It’s cool, man. Come on. We’ll go back to the condo and shoot the breeze.”

Cody

We’re quiet for a moment as we walk down the street. I can tell Hayden needs a minute to clear his head, or at least to make a little path where he can sort through his thoughts.

The thing is, I’ve never been real good at waiting, so it’s not long before I have to say some kind of something. “Good thing I wore a long jacket. One of the bartenders is a buddy of mine and he held it for me.”

Hayden seems to snap out of it at that and glances my way. “Shit. Are you cold? You can go back to Flirt.”

“Nope. Not cold. I just know I look good as fuck and it would be distracting to people walking by.”

Hayden gives me a soft chuckle. “Seriously, though. You should go back. Your night shouldn’t be ruined because of Lance’s insecurities.”

“Neither should yours,” I remind him. He tosses another glance my way, and I cock a brow at him, but he just looks toward the ground. “What good of a wingman-slash-roommate-slash-orgasm-master would I be if I bailed on you?”

He kicks a small pebble that shoots across the sidewalk. People with and without costumes walk up and down the street, laughing, talking and enjoying their night.

“Orgasm master? What do orgasms have to do with this?”

“Nothing I guess, but it’s always a good time to bring up my skills.”

Hayden gives me the first genuine laugh since shit went down with Lance, but sobers quickly. “You’re a nice guy, Cody,” he tells me.

“Yeah, I know,” I tease, but it honestly is something that’s important to me. “I don’t feel like there are enough genuinely nice people in the world.” At least none that I ran into before Doc. Once I met him, I always promised myself I would be like him. The kind of man who was there for people. “Come on, let’s grab a coffee.”

We stop at the café in front of us, and I pull the door open. They serve soups, sandwiches, pastries, and caffeine, which happen to be some of my favorite things.
